Become a sponsor

Exciting new technology now enables us to record daily kiwi behaviour, right down to what time they get up and how may hours a kiwi dad sits on his nest.

This data will be a phenomenal resource in progressing the kiwi population at Whangarei Heads. And now, you can help support the project!

Backyard Kiwi need your help toward the cost of transmitters and monitoring.

A Backyard Kiwi sponsor ($500/annum) will receive:

  • personalised updates on local kiwi
  • acknowledgements on the website
  • a complimentary Backyard Kiwi print

To take up this opportunity, email or phone us on info@backyardkiwi.org.nz or 021 1145 385

Read more about monitoring kiwi

WHLF follows the movements of some of the kiwi at Whangarei Heads by tuning into the radio channel of the transmitter we have put on their leg, using a directional aerial (like an old TV aerial) to find out where they are.

Monitoring a small percentage of our kiwi population means we learn more about our kiwi – where they are, whether they are moving around a lot, when they are nesting, whether they are being affected by dogs. For instance, we know that none of the adult kiwi transmitted last summer died because of the drought – but they didn’t lay as many eggs as normal.
