About Backyard Kiwi

Three generation of kiwi at Whangarei Heads

Backyard Kiwi is one of the projects carried out by the Whangarei Heads Landcare Forum.

Backyard Kiwi celebrates the partnership between kiwi and people in the Whangarei Heads. Because together, we can make sure kiwi are still in the “back yards” of our grandchildren.

As a Backyard Kiwi group we work to make sure that the predator control, kiwi monitoring, landowner liaison and advocacy carries on to keep our kiwi population alive and growing.

And the kiwi are winning.

Current estimates are of 300 kiwi in the Whangarei Heads. http://www.backyardkiwi.org.nz/kiwi-call-counts-complete-for-2010 We aim to have 1,000 kiwi in our backyards in 10 years, and for the average kiwi to live for 26 years – instead of the 13 on average at the moment.
